National Competition to Provide Much-Needed Boost to Calgary’s Economy

CALGARY, AB, June 26, 2013 – The Master Bowlers Association of Canada (www.masterbowling.ca) is pleased to announce that Canada’s best 5 pin bowlers will descend on Calgary, AB, to compete in the 2013 Masters Nationals. The championships will run from June 29 to July 3 and will be held at Chinook Bowladrome and Paradise Lanes in Calgary.

“Two hundred a fifty six 5 pin bowlers from eight provinces will be participating in the 2013 Masters Nationals. Men, ladies and seniors will be competing in several categories including singles, tournament teams and teaching teams,” comments Walter Heeney, president of the Master Bowlers Association of Canada (MBAC). “We are proud to be among the first events taking place in Calgary since the devastating flooding. Overall, more than 400 people will be travelling to Calgary, which will result in a much needed boost to the local economy. Approximately 160 rooms have been booked at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Calgary.”

“The 2013 Masters Nationals will give Calgarians and fans of five-pin bowling from across Alberta the opportunity to see top flight competition from Canadians who are accustomed to playing in the fast lanes,” said Alberta Culture Minister Heather Klimchuk. “My very best wishes to all competitors and visitors and heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers who have overcome many challenges to make this national championship event possible.”

About the Master Bowlers Association of Canada
The Master Bowlers Association of Canada (www.mastersbowling.ca), established over 40 years ago, provides top-flight competition for Canada best 5 pin bowlers and works towards improving the image of 5 pin bowling through its commitment to exemplary sportsmanship, ethics and conduct. Master bowlers are NCCP-certified coaches and athletes who compete as "Teaching Masters," "Tournament Masters" and "Senior Masters."

About 5-Pin Bowling
Five-pin bowling is a Canadian invention and is played only in Canada. This bowling variant was developed in 1909 by Thomas F. Ryan in Toronto, Ontario, at his Toronto Bowling Club, in response to customers who complained that the ten-pin game was too strenuous. He cut five ten-pins down to approximately 75% of their size and used hand-sized hard rubber balls. The Canadian 5 Pin Bowlers' Association (www.c5pba.ca) is the governing body for the sport in Canada.

Canadian Open Results - NWT

Now that the week is over and everyone is back at work, I would like to take a minute to reflect.

The mixed team started better than they have in a while, but fell off and struggled over the last day and a half of competition.  They collected only 12 of their total 46 points over that last half of qualifying.

The male single struggled all week with his best day on day 2 (averaging 231) but fell shy of a 225 average overall.  It was a disappointing week for him overall, finishing last in the qualifying round.

The female single on the other hand was the NWT's highlight of the week.  After averaging 258 over the first 2 days (20 games) and leading the event for the first 2 days, she fell to 5th in the qualifying round. She made the stepladder with an average of 244.  She fought hard in the first round of the stepladder, but unfortunately a number of headpins caused her to come up short.

Overall it was a good week, full of fun and excitement.  Including our first stepladder birth in as long as I can remember.

Good Job Kim Bailey, Good Job!

Next year the Open is being held in Calgary, I for one cannot wait to improve on this outing!

With last night's festivities now at a close we have the time to congratulate Kim Bailey for maintaining a stepladder position despite a rough day 3.  Kim was able to pull some critical games out of her hat at just the right times yesterday. I know that for this bowler (a couple of lanes over, and not particularly interested in his own game) she had some real nail biters.
The stepladder begins today just before 2 here in Newfoundland, that's 1030 back home. Just before that time another blog will appear here and follow every frame.
Now if you don't believe that team Pink, will be out in full force.  You be CRAZEEE.Good luck and good rolling Kim.
